Super Tackle for All the Small Ones ….

A pretty Gurnard

Here’s my favourite tackle for all the smaller species that feed close to the bottom.

This tackle has given me a number of top positions in championships and it has really passed the test when it comes to landing the highest number of species in the shortest possible time.

Every new species you catch gives you extra points in competitions, which makes it decisive to catch at large number of species in order to get a good result.

This is also an indispensible tackle for those who “collect the highest number of species” and also for those who think it’s fun to go for specific species, such as various types of flatfish.

The tackle functions well for Gurnard, Whiting, Haddock, Cod, Eel, Bluemouth, Poor Cod, Norway Pout, Goldsinny Wrasse, Plaice, Flounder, Dab, Long Rough Dab, Sole, Lemon Sole, as well as most types of Goby, wrasse and Sculpin, which in reality means that it’s not impossible to catch more than 20 species on this tackle.

As for all other tackles I make, what decides whether it fishes well or not is attention to tiny details and how you present it with bait. Use as light a weight as possible (in proportion to drift).

As bait, use pieces of cooked shrimp, periwinkle, common mussels or small strips of fat fish such as mackerel or herring.

Here is the recipe of how to make it, from the far end of the tackle to the end you hitch on to the mainline.

Dropper furthest out after the slider boom:

Hook: Mustad 92553NP-BN size 4
Knot: Snell with super glue
Tube: white phosphorescent
Pearls: mother of pearl – white-pink-mother of pearl-white
Spinner blade: silver size 1
Stopper: copper tube (sleeve)

Dropper farthest in after the slider boom:

Hook: Mustad 92553NP-BN size 4
Knots: Snell on hook and surgeon’s knot towards the mainline (If you google “snelling a hook” you will learn how to do it)
Tube: fluorescent red and phosphorescent yellow

Dropper above slider boom:

Hook: Mustad 92553NP-BN size 4
Knots: Snell on hook and surgeon’s knot towards the mainline
Tube: fluorescent red
Pearls: silver- phosphorescent -orange-light green and pallet flash
Stopper: copper tube (sleeve)

The whole tackle is made with 0.41mm Trilene fluorocarbon. Use a clear slider boom with stoppers and pearls with approx. 20cm free slide. Use a swivel on top and a phosphorescent bracing tube just after it, as you can see from the photo.

Best wishes
